Description
Over these two days, we suggest enjoying a good mix of coast and inland areas.
One highlight is the islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and its small hermitage, surrounded by cliffs and wild beaches. From here we’ll enter fully into the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve to finish in Gernika, one of the towns with the most history and identity in the entire territory.
Another must-visit is Durangaldea, a land of mythology, legends, forests, valleys and mountains, where we find the Urkiola Natural Park and the municipalities that surround it.
We suggest spending two days between the sea and the mountains.

Itinerary
Starting point San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
Start the day marvelling at the islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, crowned by a simple hermitage dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, which you can reach via its 241 steps. The best thing to do is to park your vehicle in the designated car park, then begin the climb to the hermitage. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a protected Natural Biotope where beauty and seafaring roots come together, a unique setting of battles, legends and festivities. You must have a free access ticket to get in, but if you prefer you can go to the viewpoint next to the restaurant to admire it.
The next stop is Bermeo, but before you arrive you can take a detour to Matxitxako cape, the most prominent cape on the Cantabrian coast. It’s an excellent viewpoint over the coast and has two lighthouses. The old one is now an observatory for seabirds and cetaceans, while the new one, built in 1909, continues to operate as a lighthouse.
Bermeo is an essential stop on your coastal visit. It’s a seafaring town that has the Fisherman’s Museum and its port offers the chance to visit some canneries and see the guild’s net-menders. Make the most of your visit to taste its delicious cuisine.
We continue to head right into the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, on the left bank of the estuary, the municipality of Mundaka is much more than a picturesque fishing village. It has the best left-hand wave in Europe and is a major draw for surfing enthusiasts. It has viewpoints and charming spots.
Following the route, we’ll head to Ekoetxea Urdaibai, where nature and culture meet. It’s the Biodiversity Centre of the Basque Country, located in Busturia, in the Madariaga Tower. From the Clock Tower, you can enjoy a 360º view that includes mountains, marshes and the iconic Mundaka beach.
We’ll end the day in Gernika. Gernika is a city steeped in history. The Casa de Juntas and the Tree of Gernika form a monumental complex declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, and above all they are a symbol of the history of Bizkaia and the Basque Country. In the town you can visit two key museums: the Peace Museum (an interactive museum that transports you to the day of the 1937 bombing) and the Euskal Herria Museum. It also has the largest in-use fronton (pelota court) in the world, the Jai Alai, and fairs where you can taste and buy local produce: The Monday market and, in particular, the market on the last Monday in October, when the biggest one of the year is held, with almost 900 stalls.

Itinerary
Starting point The Sanctuary of Urkiola
Today we spend the day in Durangaldea, the epicentre of Basque mythology. The region has been home to many special beings, and in fact all the characters of Basque mythology have lived in the Urkiola Natural Park. That’s why we advise you to start in the park itself. To be precise, at the Sanctuary of Urkiola. Before Christianity our ancestors also considered this place sacred, and although the date the Sanctuary was built isn’t known, it’s said to date from the 8th-11th centuries.
The stone in front of the sanctuary is striking. Locals say it’s a meteorite, but it’s actually iron ore. Legend has it that if single men and women walk around the stone they will find a wife or husband. Very close to the Sanctuary, on a signposted path, is the Three Crosses viewpoint, a true paradise overlooking the Atxarte gorge.
The park has the Toki-Alai Interpretation Centre, with a permanent exhibition of the park and information on routes, points of interest and tourist information. It must be said that among the mountains and peaks in the Urkiola Natural Park, Anboto (1,331 m) stands out, the tallest and most significant mountain in Durangaldea. Many legends are told about this mountain. There you’ll find the cave of Mari, considered the home of the Basque goddess.
This tour through the Durangaldea region then takes you to the town of Durango, a town steeped in history and culture where you can enjoy the local cuisine. Durango is a town of medieval origin, with a historic quarter declared a Monumental Complex in 1997. Among other buildings and palaces, the Basilica of Santa María de Uribarri, the church, the Santa Ana Arch and the Kurutziaga Cross stand out.
In the afternoon, head to the Gerediaga Assembly House. The hermitages of San Salvador and San Clemente, the Campos Forales, oak trees and Renaissance stone crosses make up the sworn assembly site of Gerediaga. Political decisions relating to the 12 parishes that made up Durangaldea were taken at the Provincial Assembly of Gerediaga, and today it forms the oldest European parliament. A short distance from there is the charming and peaceful village of Garai, on the slopes of Mount Oiz, as well as the Momoitio hermitage and the necropolis dating from the 9th century.
The last stop is Elorrio, with an extraordinary monumental heritage. Elorrio has a historic and artistic complex of great value, with palaces, coats of arms, fountains and crosses adorning every quarter of the town. It’s the municipality with the most coats of arms in Bizkaia with 69. In Elorrio you’ll find the Argiñeta Necropolis which, both for the number and the chronology of the sarcophagi built from the 7th-9th centuries to the Middle Ages, is one of the most important funerary monuments in the Basque Country. The sarcophagi were built to be used in the necropolises of the various surrounding neighbourhoods, but they were regrouped in their current location in the 19th century. In the municipality you can also visit Solatsu Telleria-Baserria, with its interpretation centre about tile making.
