Here we suggest you some of the best plan you can enjoy with your kids:

1. With their joy to the museum

In Bilbao Bizkaia we feel proud of our past and our roots. Therefore, we want all the visitors to enjoy and have fun while discovering our heritage. One good example of this are our museums and the wide variety of activities addressed to families with children. It´s true that our capital, Bilbao, gathers a great number of museums and thus, activities, like the Guggenheim Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, the Itsasmueum Bilbao (Maritime museum), the Archaeological Museum and the Basque Museum, amongst others, but Bizkaia as a whole pays attention to children. For instance, in inland towns like Balmaseda, you can enjoy La Encartada Museoa and its wide range of activities. At the seaside, in Bermeo, you can visit the Fisherman's Museum and those wishing to get a further insight into sailing we recommend you the Lighthouse of Santa Catalina, the first and only lighthouse you can visit in the Basque Country, don’t miss out!

2. When xirimiristarts pouring…We've the plan!

Txikiland is a comfortable free-entrance place that offers many options for children aged between 0 and 13 years. An area that seeks to foster positive values and ‘serious games’ to encourage their knowledge. As for the snack time, we recommend you to go on a pilgrimage and search for the perfect cake. We do not like lying, in Bilbao Bizkaia we have a sweet tooth that is why we have sweets bakes, rolls and cakes you will not be able to find anywhere else: carolinas, butter sweet rolls, rice cake or santiaguitos. You cannot leave without trying the famous ‘ori-baltzak’ from Gernika and the delicious ‘cocotes’ from Markina-Xemein. If your children are a bit older, we suggest you to spend a great time in any of the escape rooms scattered around our Territory.

3. Adventurers… Get ready!

Notice to seafarers, getting to know Bilbao by boat is inexcusable! By boat or by kayak, you will have the opportunity to discover the capital in a very different way. Would you like to do it so on wheels, we recommend you to hire some bikes and cycle all through the River bank, from the Old Town to Zorrozaurre. But if there is a place where you can stare at the city and its River is from the surrounding mountains. One of the landmarks of the city is Artxanda Mount. You will reach the top in less than three minutes by cable car,  where you will be able to appreciate some fabulous views of the Bilbao Metropolitano. However, if talking about views, we need to mention the ones from the Bizkaia Bridge, located 20 minutes metro drive away from Bilbao (stops Areeta or Portugalete); the stunning pictures from San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, also known as Dragonstones at Games of Thrones, or the fresh air that you can breathe at La Arboleda after having taken Larreineta, the oldest one in Bizkaia.

For the football lovers, we can not stop recommending you to live a match in San Mames, The Cathedral, or having a tour through more than 105 of history at Athletic Club Museum, it´s impressive to see how the lions roar!

 4.   On the search for wildlife

Thanks to the green areas, the valles and a wild coast, Bilbao Bizkaia is a perfect place for children to enjoy nature and wildlife at its finest. Our territory gathers the Natural Parks of Gorbeia, Urkiola and Armañon, all of them with tracks for all the different levels. For those who want to get closer to animals, we suggest you to visit Urdaibai Bird Center where you will be able to birdwatch all the migratory birds that flies over our sky. Another funny way of touring one of our most cherished treasure, the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai, is from the water by paddling through the estuary by stand up paddle, canoe or kayak. Without leaving the marine life aside, we would like to suggest you one of the most unique activities that is to whale and dolphin sighting, in a peaceful and respectful way, of course. With departures from different ports like Santurtzi o Bermeo, you will be able to know the Gulf of Biscay and its marine life accompanied by the great experts and naturists.

Once with the feet on the ground, we recommend you to take your bins and get to know one of the wildlife shelters where they protect the endangered animals, such as Basondo in Kortezubi or Karpin in Karrantza.

5. For those wishing to surprise the family

For those wishing to surprise the family with a unique stay, we suggest you some special plans like going horse riding close to Butron Castle, becoming a sepher for one day at Urkiola or discovering the underground heritage by visiting Pozalagua caves in Armañon  or the ones of Santimamiñe in Kortezubi. If you feel like getting closer to our culture, you can attend an exhibition of ‘herri kirolak’  (Basque rural sports) or learn how to cook one of our traditional dishes in any cooking workshop. If you want to get away from the city noise, we suggest you to sleep in any rural accommodation in Bizkaia.

We're looking forward to seeing you around!
