Description

This three-day plan is designed for you to enjoy the blue of the sea and the green of the mountains.

You’ll visit emblematic places such as the Bizkaia Bridge which invites us to stroll along both its banks, the Gorbeia Natural Park and the tranquillity of its villages and peaks. There’s also the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, a natural paradise that combines sea and softly contoured mountains.

We suggest three days painting brushstrokes in blue and green.

Itinerary

The Bay of El Abra is made up of the municipalities of Santurtzi, Portugalete and Getxo.

Start your day in Santurtzi. Head to the Santurtzi fishing port to discover its seafaring essence and taste its famous sardines. The colourful boats and the fresh scent of the sea will transport you to a world where the fishing tradition comes alive with true passion. Inside the fishermen’s guild, the Sea Museum showcases the maritime history of this beautiful town.

Continue on foot along the seafront and discover life on board an authentic fishing boat at the Agurtza Boat Museum which stands close to Portugalete’s Iron Pier.

We continue towards Portugalete along the Churruca Pier, which will leave you at the foot of the Bizkaia Bridge. It is home to the tide gauge installed in 1883 to measure the depth of the channel along its promenade.

Once in Portugalete, lose yourself in the Historic Quarter, full of history, colour and a great atmosphere where you’ll find the Basilica of Santa María. It combines medieval charm with the industrial heritage on show at Rialia, the Museum of Industry.

Also, we mustn’t forget that Portugalete is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Bizkaia Bridge and the Northern Way of Saint James which, as it passes through its streets, adds to the medieval and pilgrim atmosphere.

Once we’ve visited Portugalete, we’ll cross the Bizkaia Bridge in its gondola, or if you prefer, on foot along its panoramic walkway that stands 50 metres high. The Bizkaia Bridge is a work of iron-forged engineering that was the first transporter bridge in the world, and was declared a Historical Artistic Monument.

In addition to being awarded with other distinctions and recognitions, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006. This iron giant symbolises industrial innovation.

Getxo awaits on the other side.

Getxo, with its bourgeois and stately character, is located on the right bank of the estuary. Relive Getxo’s golden years along the Promenade of the Grand Villas, classified in 2001 as a Cultural Asset in the Monumental Complex category. The promenade ends at the Punta Begoña galleries, the former mansion of businessman Horacio Echevarrieta, now open to visitors.

At that very point Ereaga Beach begins, stretching practically to the Old Port of Algorta, with its seafaring charm and lively bars where you can enjoy pintxos (Basque tapas) with a nice glass of txakoli.

Starting point

You can do this route in reverse if you’d like, it’s up to you!

You can reach both Santurtzi and the Old Port of Algorta by public transport.

A GOOD IDEA

Very close to Santurtzi, don’t miss the Zierbena fishing port, enjoy a swim at La Arena Beach or marvel at the Itsaslur Greenway.

If industrial tourism is your thing, don’t forget to visit the municipalities of Sestao and Barakaldo, key places in the history of Bizkaia’s industrialisation.

Itinerary

Starting point Orozko Museum

With this day plan, we’ll visit the municipalities at the foot of the Gorbeia and Urkiola Natural Parks.

We’ll begin at the Orozko Ethnographic Museum. We recommend exploring this space in an 18th-century manor house, ideal for families, friends or enjoying on your own. By walking through its three floors, you’ll learn about the history of the Orozko Valley, its palaces and manor houses, churches and hermitages, and the importance of its rivers as a source of energy. It’s worth highlighting an exhibition whose proposal offers a rereading of the presence of women in history and in the historical discourse, especially in activities associated with the tasks assigned to them and their invisibility in terms of historical relevance. On the ground floor, you’ll find the Gorbeia tourist office, where you can take the opportunity to pick up information for the rest of the day.

The next stop is Areatza, whose historic centre is classified as a Cultural Asset in the Monumental Complex category, and with the help of a QR code you can follow a self-guided route through its narrow cobbled streets. You can also visit its interpretation centre located in the same town hall square. We leave Areatza and within a few kilometres we arrive in Zeanuri. We can stroll among farmhouses and head to the Saldropo wetland to enjoy the woodland and beech forests and take a short walk.

We continue our route and arrive in Otxandio. Otxandio is one of the most characteristic towns in our area. The Basque language survives in the streets, among young and old alike, as they go out for pintxos (Basque tapas) and potes (drinks) around town. Come and join in this culinary tradition, which is undoubtedly a hallmark of the Basque Country.

We’ll finish the day in Dima, which stretches along both sides of the Indusi Valley, a tributary of the Arratia, extending south to Mount Goikogana. From the mountains of the Urkiola Natural Park, which you can access from Dima, known as “the little Basque Switzerland”, you can see all the summits of the neighbouring Gorbeia Natural Park. If you’ve still got time, you can’t miss its mythological route to the Baltzola caves.

A GOOD IDEA

For nature and mountain enthusiasts, there are different routes and paths to reach such surprising places as: The cross on Mount Gorbeia, standing at 1,481 metres above sea level and a landmark of Basque mountaineering culture, the majestic Kurtzegan menhir, over five metres tall and weighing seven tonnes (the tallest in the country), and the protected Itzina biotope, home to the Aitzulo natural arch and the Neberabarri icehouse.

The Gorbeia Natural Park also hides numerous grottoes and caves, such as the Supelegor Cave and the Baltzola Cave. The Baltzola complex has been declared a Qualified Cultural Asset as a Monumental Complex by the Basque Government due to the important archaeological site it contains. We can’t visit the interior of the cave, but the main gallery is accessible.

Itinerary

Starting point Santimamiñe Cave car park

Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1984, Urdaibai is the greatest natural treasure the Basque Country has to offer. This estuary, at the mouth of the Oka river, combines sea, softly contoured mountains, sands and marshes.

We’ll start this day with a walk that will take us to the Oma Forest. To do so, you must park in the car park next to the Santimamiñe Caves. To access the forest you need to book in advance and we also recommend you wear suitable footwear, comfortable clothing and take water with you. The route to be covered on foot from the car park is 2.8 kilometres long and takes approximately 50 minutes. The Oma Forest, in Kortezubi, is a magical place where art and nature come together. It’s made up of several sets of motifs and geometric figures painted on the trunks of radiata pines, with the aim of bringing artistic work into the natural environment.

Once you’ve visited the forest, we suggest you go into the Santimamiñe Cave, the most important archaeological site in Bizkaia, declared a World Heritage Site in 2008. It preserves remains of human settlements over 14,000 years old and houses almost 50 beautiful cave paintings inside that depict bison, horses, a bear and a deer, among other things. It’s worth bearing in mind that advance booking is required for this activity too.

Before continuing, we recommend you recharge your batteries in one of the restaurants in the area, as we still have the afternoon to spend travelling around the reserve.

The next stop is the Urdaibai Bird Center, located in the municipality of Gautegiz Arteaga, in the heart of the marsh. It serves as an international airport for birds, offering us a wonderful glimpse into this great natural spectacle. The centre offers audio guides, exhibitions and a large viewpoint equipped with state-of-the-art cameras and telescopes for you to enjoy this experience.

To put the finishing touch to this day in the reserve, head to the beaches of Laida and Laga, where you can take a swim, sunbathe or stroll along them. If you’re bolder and you like the sea, in Laida you can do some surfing and kayaking. Laga, by contrast, is a wilder beach, exposed to the open sea next to Cape Ogoño, which makes it one of the most beautiful beaches in the Basque Country.

A GOOD IDEA

If you want the full Urdaibai experience, you can round it off with plan number three.

You can visit the municipalities of Elantxobe and Ea. They are two very picturesque coastal municipalities that leave a lasting impression.

Urdaibai by train: The train that links Bilbao with Urdaibai, as well as being a comfortable and sustainable way to access this incredible natural space, is an attraction in itself, and you’ll enjoy a wonderful panorama.
