Bizkaia Bridge

The Bizkaia Bridge is a work of iron-forged engineering that was the first transporter bridge in the world, and was declared a Historical Artistic Monument. In addition to being awarded with other distinctions and recognitions, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006. We owe this great work to the master Alberto de Palacio who, together with Ferdinand Arnodin, made the dream of joining both banks come true. On the left bank, ore and iron were worked tirelessly, while on the right bank, the bourgeoisie settled.

Information about accessibility

A Good Idea

You can walk along either of the banks that the bridge connects. It is an ideal opportunity to discover the historic centre of Portugalete, or immerse yourself in the bourgeois era by strolling through Getxo and its grand villas. If you prefer heights, a good idea is to climb up to the pedestrian walkway at the top of the bridge and look out over the mouth of the estuary. Don’t forget to sample the great Basque cuisine in the many bars and restaurants located on either of the banks.
