From Bilbao to Santurtzi

From Bilbao to Santurtzi Itinerary

City

Description

Unlike the popular local song “From Santurce to Bilbao”, our two-day plan is the other way around.

You can start in the capital, strolling through its streets, wandering through the Old Quarter where there are a wide range of food and wine options and shops, ride up to the Artxanda viewpoint on the funicular which is still operating today and visit one of the most famous museums in the world: The Guggenheim Museum.

On the second day, we suggest a visit to the municipalities around the Bay of El Abra, which you can reach by public transport from Bilbao. You’ll get to know the municipalities of Santurtzi, Portugalete and Getxo and marvel at the Bizkaia Bridge, an industrial gem and World Heritage Site.

We suggest a two-day trip from Bilbao to Santurtzi.

Itinerary

Starting point Plaza Circular

We begin the day in Plaza Circular, right next to Abando’s train, metro, tram and bus station, where you’ll also find Bilbao’s tourist office and where we can pick up a map and information to get around the town.

Heading down Calle Navarra, we come to the Arenal Bridge, which we’ll cross to reach the Arriaga Theatre, noteworthy for its neo-baroque façade and the square, a popular meeting place for the people of Bilbao. Calle Bidebarrieta leads us into the Old Quarter, a maze of pedestrian streets where you can enjoy bars, restaurants and a wide range of shops. In the Old Quarter, we mustn’t miss the Ribera Market next to the church and the San Antón Bridge, Santiago Cathedral, Plaza Nueva or the Mallona Steps next to the Bilbao Archaeological Museum which lead up to the Basilica of Begoña.

We leave the Old Quarter and head for the funicular. On the way we’ll see the town hall, and we’ll stroll along the riverbank on the Campo Volantín Promenade until we reach the funicular square. The funicular, which made its first journey in 1915, takes us up to Mount Artxanda, where we’ll find the viewpoint to enjoy an impressive panorama of the town. Artxanda has restaurants and picnic areas and offers the chance to take part in sports both outdoors (hiking, cycling, etc.) and indoors, since it has a sports centre.

We’ll head back down to the city and we’ll cross to the other side of the estuary via one of its bridges (Zubizuri or La Salve Bridge) to reach the Guggenheim Museum. The Guggenheim Museum is the iconic symbol of the city, an emblematic building that marked a turning point, transforming it from an industrial city to one open to the world, as well as being cosmopolitan, modern and sustainable. The Guggenheim Museum is a work of art in itself, housing collections of contemporary art inside, and outside it’s also an open-air museum with pieces that are impossible to ignore.

Another of the city’s key museums is the Fine Arts Museum, very close to the Guggenheim Museum, and home to one of the most prestigious art collections. It’s located next to the lovely Doña Casilda park, the city’s green space par excellence, which invites you to rest, visit the duck pond or take a pleasant stroll.

To finish, there’s nothing better than losing yourself in Bilbao’s Ensanche district and recharging your batteries in any of its bars and restaurants.

Itinerary

The Bay of El Abra is made up of the municipalities of Santurtzi, Portugalete and Getxo.

Start your day in Santurtzi. Head to the Santurtzi fishing port to discover its seafaring essence and taste its famous sardines. The colourful boats and the fresh scent of the sea will transport you to a world where the fishing tradition comes alive with true passion. Inside the fishermen’s guild, the Sea Museum showcases the maritime history of this beautiful town.

Continue on foot along the seafront and discover life on board an authentic fishing boat at the Agurtza Boat Museum which stands close to Portugalete’s Iron Pier.

We continue towards Portugalete along the Churruca Pier, which will leave you at the foot of the Bizkaia Bridge. It is home to the tide gauge installed in 1883 to measure the depth of the channel along its promenade.

Once in Portugalete, lose yourself in the Historic Quarter, full of history, colour and a great atmosphere where you’ll find the Basilica of Santa María. It combines medieval charm with the industrial heritage on show at Rialia, the Museum of Industry.

Also, we mustn’t forget that Portugalete is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Bizkaia Bridge and the Northern Way of Saint James which, as it passes through its streets, adds to the medieval and pilgrim atmosphere.

Once we’ve visited Portugalete, we’ll cross the Bizkaia Bridge in its gondola, or if you prefer, on foot along its panoramic walkway that stands 50 metres high. The Bizkaia Bridge is a work of iron-forged engineering that was the first transporter bridge in the world, and was declared a Historical Artistic Monument.

In addition to being awarded with other distinctions and recognitions, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006. This iron giant symbolises industrial innovation.

Getxo awaits on the other side.

Getxo, with its bourgeois and stately character, is located on the right bank of the estuary. Relive Getxo’s golden years along the Promenade of the Grand Villas, classified in 2001 as a Cultural Asset in the Monumental Complex category. The promenade ends at the Punta Begoña galleries, the former mansion of businessman Horacio Echevarrieta, now open to visitors.

At that very point Ereaga Beach begins, stretching practically to the Old Port of Algorta, with its seafaring charm and lively bars where you can enjoy pintxos (Basque tapas) with a nice glass of txakoli.

Starting point

You can do this route in reverse if you’d like, it’s up to you!

You can reach both Santurtzi and the Old Port of Algorta by public transport.
