  • Bilbao Green way

In the last few years, the once grey Bilbao has changed colours. It is now a much friendlier looking and the recovery and creation of new green spaces is a key part of the city's transformation. These spaces are comprised of urban parks and forest areas. The former add up to 200 hectares in 21 parks. Forest areas make up 1,025 hectares distributed over five areas: Artxanda, Monte Avril,Arnotegi, Pagasarri and Arraiz with 21 recreational areas. These spaces have playgrounds, tables, grills, benches and informational and panoramic signage.

  • There is also the GR trail encircling the city centre, with 99.30 km passing through the forest preserves of the Green Way. It’s an enclosed area with paths, trails and streets well-marked with route references, places of interest and general information. There are entrances at several points of Bilbao from the 11 trails leading to the central path.

    The painted forest

This is how enchanted the Oma Forest is. It’s a magical place showcasing tree trunks painted in such a way that some figures can only be seen from certain positions, as the image is formed as a combination of various trunks.

The forest, an original work by Agustín Ibarrola, had a total of 47 painted figures. With time and the natural processes of the forest, the work has needed to be relocated, recovering lost images like the Mosque of Córdoba, Homage to the Oak, Nuclear Threat and Bidimensional Diagonal.

The current 34 sets, over nearly 800 trees can be seen in Kortezubi, a small rural town in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Its figures come to life as you wander the forest, appearing and growing thanks to the work's bidimensional and tridimensional nature.

  • Green Trails

    At full speed

These routes come from the reconversion of train tracks in disuse. This recovery effort was a result not just of wishing to prepare trails for ecotourism, but also in the spirit of rescuing the cultural, historical and practical significance of these routes.Bizkaia has a variety of green trails available to walkers and cyclists. The Montes de Hierro trail that connects Artzentales and Zierbena is 42.5 km long and passes through several valleys in the Enkarterri region.

  • The Atxuri trail is 3.8 km long and connects Sondika and Mungia. The 5 km Arrazola green trail runs along the Atxondo valley and is more suitable for walkers. The 2.2 km Itsaslur trail, between the villages of Pobeña and Kobaron (Muskiz), has maginificent coastal views.

The Kadagua trail between Balmaseda and Alonsotegi follows the old La Robla railway line for a sublime stroll along the river Kadagua (18 km). In Ortuella, a 3.7 km section of old La Orkonera mining railway has been recovered.

  • The Way of ST. JAMES

The Way of the Coast or Northern Way of St. James is one of the oldest pilgrimage routes, passing through the Basque coast and coexisting with the farming and urban life of the region. It comes from Gipuzkoa and enters Bizkaia through Markina-Xemein, passes throughout the inland section of the territory until Bilbao and from there goes to Enkarterri, then hits the coast in Muskiz before going on to Cantabria.

Bizkaia also has the Forgotten Way. This is an age-old Jacobean route from Bilbao to Villafranca del Bierzo, in León, which was recovered in 21 stages in 1993. The route goes through Alonsotegi, Sodupe, Güenes, Zalla and Balmaseda, allowing pilgrims to gaze at the remains of Roman and Medieval roads, bridges, churches and Romanesque art with Jacobean iconography.
