Climbing to new heights

Where ANIMALS OF ALL SORTS live
Pumas, racoons, ferrets, turtles, monkeys... There are so many animals here as a result of illegal hunting or animal trafficking, from the closure of animal farms or birth in captivity... They now inhabit BBK Karpin Fauna, in the Karrantza Valley, a specialised refuge for animals who cannot live in their own habitat.
In Urdaibai you’ll find Basondo, a 60,000 m2 refuge for endangered wildlife: wild boars, foxes, roe deer, genets, wild cats, otters, reptiles, birds of prey, migratory birds, and other species that can be found nowhere else including the lynx, the European bison and the wolf. Don’t forget Urdaibai Bird Centre, a bird observatory in the biosphere reserve. Birdwatching excursions in the Salvada-Gorobel mountains depart from Orduña.

Natural cathedrals
Work in a nearby quarry led to the discovery of the treasure of Pozalagua, a 125 m cavity with the largest concentration of peculiar stalactites in the world. One of nature's spectacular creations to be seen in the Karrantza Valley.
Another notable cave is Santimamiñe, in Kortezubi, with cave paintings of a variety of animals (brown bears, bison, deer, etc.) and great geological wealth in the form of beautiful columns made from the fusion of stalactites and stalagmites. The Balzola cave, for its part, offers a stage full of natural force and mythological content in the Arratia Valley. Here, between the rocks and an environment showcasing all shades of green, a number of easily traversable underground passages have been created, making it one of the most interesting spots in Bizkaia.

One of the most breathtaking places is the balcony overlooking the Delika Canyon, a few metres from the Salto del Nervión Waterfall. Another viewpoint can be found next to the Urkiola Sanctuary; there a stations of the cross marks the path to the Three Crosses viewpoint with a unique panoramic view of the Atxarte river gorge and Durangaldea.
Perfect for a bird’s eye view of the Karrantza Valley, it's the viewpoint where you’ll find the monument to Our Lady of the Good Event, the patron saint and protector of the area.
Setting the boundary of Bilbao and offering a beautiful panoramic view of the city is Artxanda. Overlooking both sides of the Nervión River is Serantes, a defensively strategic location in the mining area close to Gallarta, where you’ll be able to gaze upon the lunar landscape of the Bodovalle mine, which ceased operations in 1993.
