The Bizkaia Bridge, not just a bridge
Information about accessibility Bizkaia Bridge
The Bizkaia Bridge, popularly known as the Hanging Bridge, is a symbol of the industrial era and one of the most representative icons of Bilbao Bizkaia. Built in 1893, it was the first metal transporter bridge to be built in the world and has since witnessed important historical events.
In this article, we will explore the history behind it, the daily operation at present and some of the peculiarities of this impressive monument that is a must-see for anyone visiting Bilbao Bizkaia.
Find out all that the Bizkaia Bridge has to offer.
What is the story behind it?
The Bizkaia Bridge is much more than a simple bridge; it is a true masterpiece of civil engineering that has survived the passage of time. This impressive structure was inaugurated in 1893 by the engineer Alberto de Palacio y Elissague, who worked together with the French architect Ferdinand Arnodin.
The bridge was built to link the spas located on either side of the banks of the Bilbao estuary.
The Bizkaia Bridge has witnessed important historical events, and in 2006 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its heritage value.
It has also undergone several improvements and renovations in recent years to ensure its safety and preservation as a historical heritage site. Specifically, the iron structure was restored to ensure it will be preserved for future generations.
Ways to cross the bridge
Today, the Bizkaia Bridge is one of the main tourist attractions in the region, offering visitors a unique experience through its impressive elevated platform.
One way of crossing the river on the bridge is by gondola, which is the original mode of transport. The gondola is a suspended platform that moves along the bridge by means of cables, transporting vehicles and pedestrians from one bank of the estuary to the other. This means of transport is very popular with tourists, as it offers a spectacular view of the bridge and the estuary.
Another way of cross the bridge is via the pedestrian footbridge, which is located at the top of the bridge. This elevated walkway allows visitors to walk over the bridge and enjoy breathtaking views of the surroundings from a height of 45 metres.
Get to know all its activities
The Bizkaia Bridge offers various activities for the more adventurous:
Sky Climbing + Abseiling
Participants can climb up inside the bridge to the panoramic footbridge at a height of 45 metres, and then make the vertiginous descent by abseiling down a rope. This activity is perfect for those looking for a thrilling experience and a breathtaking view of the surroundings from the top of the bridge.
Climbing to the top
You can also climb to the top of the Bizkaia Bridge, from where you can take a unique photo with spectacular views. This activity allows access to the highest part of the bridge structure, either from the footbridge or from one of the terraces of Getxo.
Bungee jumping
It consists of jumping into the void from the bridge with a rubber band secured to the ankles. Although this activity is not available at the moment, many have jumped from its 45-metre height, providing a breathtaking free-fall experience.
Wouldn’t you just love to know the Bizkaia Bridge first hand? If you plan to visit Bilbao Bizkaia, this is a mandatory stop. We hope to see you there!
