Find out all that the Bizkaia Bridge has to offer.

What is the story behind it?

The Bizkaia Bridge is much more than a simple bridge; it is a true masterpiece of civil engineering that has survived the passage of time. This impressive structure was inaugurated in 1893 by the engineer Alberto de Palacio y Elissague, who worked together with the French architect Ferdinand Arnodin.

The bridge was built to link the spas located on either side of the banks of the Bilbao estuary.

The Bizkaia Bridge has witnessed important historical events, and in 2006 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its heritage value.

It has also undergone several improvements and renovations in recent years to ensure its safety and preservation as a historical heritage site. Specifically, the iron structure was restored to ensure it will be preserved for future generations.

Ways to cross the bridge

Today, the Bizkaia Bridge is one of the main tourist attractions in the region, offering visitors a unique experience through its impressive elevated platform.

One way of crossing the river on the bridge is by gondola, which is the original mode of transport. The gondola is a suspended platform that moves along the bridge by means of cables, transporting vehicles and pedestrians from one bank of the estuary to the other. This means of transport is very popular with tourists, as it offers a spectacular view of the bridge and the estuary.

Another way of cross the bridge is via the pedestrian footbridge, which is located at the top of the bridge. This elevated walkway allows visitors to walk over the bridge and enjoy breathtaking views of the surroundings from a height of 45 metres.
