A bit of history

  • Orconera Lutxana Bilduma is the moveable industrial heritage warehouse of the Department of Culture and Linguistic Policy of the Basque government. In terms of function, it is the heir of Konsoni Lantegia, the old Zorrotzaurre building where machinery, structures and components of the Basque Country’s industrial past were kept.

  • The collection held in Orconera is the second largest collection of industrial heritage in Spain. The collection is as varied as industrial activity in the Basque Country. You’ll find everything from the early agricultural machinery to the heavy components of our iron and steel industry; there’s something from any industry you can imagine. The representation of the three provinces is in line with how they were industrialised. Ajuria, Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, Papeleras… A laundry list that is sure to draw visitors in and teach them about the industrial history of the Basque Country.

  • The Basque government’s Moveable Industrial Heritage Warehouse is located in the old moveable parts repair workshops of the historical Compañía Minera Orconera Iron Ore Ltd., the same location where the seeds of the defunct Basque Industry Museum were sown in the 1980s.

  • The warehouse is there to preserve and store, serving as a bridge for exhibits and to add to the discourse of other sectoral museums in the Basque Country. However, despite its non-museum, preservation-centred nature, the warehouse has made an effort to organise the materials to make visits culturally satisfying experiences.
