History of Ilgner building

It is the only remaining Altos Hornos de Vizcaya (AHV) building dedicated to production left in Barakaldo.
Built in 1927, it is currently the headquarters of BIC Bizkaia Ezkerraldea (Centro de Desarrollo Empresarial de la Margen Izquierda S.A.).

A bit of history

  • The Ilgner building is the only building still standing of all the buildings used for production at Barakaldo’s Altos Hornos de Vizcaya (AHV) steelworks. It is a concrete building, unique given its monumentalism and grandeur both in terms of the construction materials used and for its plan. It was built in 1927 to house the substation with two Ilgner electrical transformers, hence its name, that were used to power a blooming lamination train.

  • The building was renovated to house the headquarters of the BIC Bizkaia Ezkerraldea (Centro de Desarrollo Empresarial de la Margen Izquierda S.A.), which supports the creation of companies to create jobs and bring resources to the area.
