Necropolis of Argiñeta

Description

Both due to the number of its elements and their quality likewise the remote chronology of some (7th-9th century), Argiñeta necropolis is one of the most important funeral monuments in the Basque Country.

This necropolis comprising 20 tombs and 5 stelae is located opposite San Adrian Chapel on the outskirts of Elorrio.

The monuments were built in the Upper Middle Ages for use in the necropolis of the different districts in the area (Mendraka, Miota, and Berrio); however, they were regrouped in their current location in the 19th century. Both the tombs and funeral stelae were erected with sandstone from the quarries in Oiz mountain. (Euskadi Website)
