Description
The Euskal Herria Museum is housed in the Baroque palace of Alegría, which was rebuilt in 1733. The Bizkaia Provincial Council acquired the site in 1982, restoring it as the Euskal Herria Museum with the aim of creating an exhibition that would help convey the historical, political and cultural significance of the provincial environment in which it is located, as well as explain the characteristics of the spiritual community that makes up Euskal Herria.
The museum is structured over four floors. The ground floor is dedicated to understanding the physical environment that shapes the way of life in the region. The first floor focuses on historical developments and the events that resulted in the current political landscape. The second floor showcases defining aspects such as sport, folklore, festivals, music, dance, beliefs and myths. The top floor, the attic, is the space dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The message is simple: if you are interested in Euskal Herria, this is the perfect place to discover its history.
The Euskal Herria Museum is located in a rehabilitated historic building. As it is a heritage property, some architectural features may present limitations inherent to its historical origin. For this reason, visitors are advised, according to their specific accessibility needs, to contact the museum in advance to obtain information on access conditions, available routes, technical or human support, and services that may facilitate the visit.
