Description

Mount Artxanda, located just a few minutes from the center of Bilbao, is one of the city's most iconic spots, offering breathtaking panoramic views and natural landscapes.

The route is divided into three sections, each with its own charm and characteristics, both in terms of scenery and ease of access, ensuring a unique experience tailored to a variety of interests.

Section 1 - From the Funicular to the Artxanda Viewpoint

Not suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The funicular allows you to travel from the center of Bilbao to the top of the mountain in a comfortable and quick way.

It has accessible platforms, with spaces reserved for wheelchairs and strollers.

Once at the top, the access to the viewpoint is barrier-free, with wide and paved paths, no steep inclines, ensuring easy access. There are also shaded areas and benches to sit and relax.

Section 2 - From the Artxanda viewpoint to Txakoli Berriz

Not suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

This route passes through the Artxanda forest and rural areas, offering views of the city, the vineyards of the Txakoli valley, and Bilbao Airport.

After the viewpoint, the road becomes considerably steep and provides access to the Artxanda Trench interpretation area via wooden ramp walkways, or continues toward Txakoli Ballano and the "Paseo de Artxanda" viewpoint. Parking is available nearby to avoid the slope.

The route mostly runs alongside the road, on wide and compacted paths with gradients ranging from 4% to 18%. It connects with the region’s winemaking tradition, with the Txakoli Berriz winery standing out as a key point of interest for local wine enthusiasts at the end of the trail.

Section 3 - From Txakoli Berriz to Elorrieta via wooden walkways

This final section is a unique experience, following a path through wooden walkways and natural areas that ensure accessibility along the entire route. It allows visitors to discover the mountain in its purest state, while enjoying a peaceful and accessible walk away from the city's hustle and bustle.

Throughout the section, a wide path is maintained, with slopes around 8% and double-height handrails. In the viewpoints, these are replaced with glass to preserve unobstructed views of the landscape.

The trail ends in Elorrieta, an area closer to the base of the mountain, which is also accessible by public transport.
