The image shows a nighttime view of the Port of Bermeo from an elevated pedestrian promenade with a continuous metal railing along the edge, acting as protection against the drop toward the water. The surface of the walkway is continuous and even, allowing wheelchair users and people with mobility aids to move along it comfortably. In the background, numerous boats are moored along the docks, and a line of illuminated buildings from the urban area can be seen, including the tower of a church rising above the façades. The entire section remains open, with good visibility and no obstacles in the main circulation area.
The image shows a section of Bermeo’s old town at night, with a wide pedestrian street paved with regular stone slabs forming a continuous, step-free route suitable for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. On the left, landscaped areas with trees, benches and litter bins are arranged outside the main walking strip, while on the right, building façades line the street with arcades and café terraces. Tables, chairs and folded umbrellas are placed in a side band without reducing the clear width of the route. The area is lit by regularly spaced streetlights, improving visibility of the pavement and route edges and maintaining a clear, stable and unobstructed circulation throughout the street.
The image shows the cloister of the San Francisco complex in Bermeo at night, with a rectangular inner courtyard surrounded by arcaded stone galleries evenly illuminated. The central area contains a garden with grass and several trees, while the surrounding circulation route is paved with rounded cobblestones, which form a continuous but uneven surface that can cause vibration and increased effort when using a wheelchair. The covered galleries provide a protected, step-free passage around the cloister, although the irregular surface requires care and, if necessary, assistance.
The image shows a street in Bermeo’s old town at night, sloping downward toward the port and paved with stone cobbles that create a continuous but uneven surface. On the right, a stone staircase provides a direct way to overcome the height difference, while alongside it runs a narrow ramp with a metal handrail that offers a step-free alternative for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. On the left, a low wall with a railing separates the street from a higher level, and waste containers are positioned along the roadway, partially reducing the clear width of the passage. This makes the route usable but requires caution and more precise manoeuvring at this point.

Description

Bermeo is a coastal town located within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, just a few kilometres from San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, and is one of the most important historical and fishing centres in Bizkaia. Its urban and economic development has traditionally been linked to the sea, creating a distinctive urban landscape where the port, the old town and public spaces form a continuous and easily recognisable whole.

For centuries, Bermeo has maintained an intense fishing activity, particularly related to deep-sea fishing and whaling, which shaped its historical and social identity. This relationship with the sea is still visible today, both in the functioning of the port and in the surrounding buildings, museums and urban spaces. The old port, with its narrow houses and colourful façades, is one of the town’s most representative areas and provides a direct connection between the maritime space and everyday life.

Important heritage elements are located in this area, including the Ercilla Tower, which houses the Arrantzaleen Museoa (Fishermen’s Museum), the 14th-century Arch of San Juan—the last remnant of the former town walls—the 19th-century town hall, and the churches of Santa María and Santa Eufemia. The proximity between the harbour front, the old port and the historic centre makes it possible to follow a short-distance route linking places of interest, restaurants and cultural landmarks. This urban-maritime ensemble offers an environment well suited to a structured visit at a comfortable pace.

Highlight

  • Approximately 1 km route through an urban and port environment, mostly level along the main sections.
  • Continuous promenade along the marina and the old port, with stable paving and wide circulation areas.
  • Lamera Park as a key point along the route, with rest areas, fountains, shade and food services.
  • Access to the San Francisco Cloister via a ramp, with cobblestone paving inside, and the presence of important historic buildings such as the Church of Santa Eufemia along the route.
  • This route meets minimum accessibility criteria, verified by specialised technicians.

How to get here

Bus (Bizkaibus)

  • Main routes include line A3515 (Bermeo–Gernika–Amorebieta–Bilbao) and line A3527 (Bermeo–Mungia–Bilbao via motorway), which run regularly throughout the day between Bilbao and Bermeo.
  • Buses run approximately every hour, with travel times ranging from about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes depending on the route and service.

Train

  • There is a direct train line from Bilbao to Bermeo operated by Euskotren, known as the “Urdaibai Line”.
  • The line departs from the Zazpikaleak / Casco Viejo area in Bilbao and arrives at Bermeo station in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.

By car

  • Bermeo can be reached from Bilbao and other parts of Bizkaia mainly via the BI-631 and N-634 roads, with a journey time of about 40 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic and departure point.
  • In high season, parking restrictions may apply in the town centre, so planning ahead is recommended.

Route

  • Section 1

Old town and port of Bermeo

Suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The route begins in the parking area located next to the Bermeo Marina, a convenient arrival point very close to the waterfront. From here, visitors access the harbour promenade directly, which is entirely level, with no separate kerbs or steps, and where the roadway and pedestrian area share the same height and a continuous surface.

The itinerary follows the crescent-shaped outline of the harbour, running along the dock from the marina to the area of the old port. This section allows a continuous reading of the colourful traditional façades, the quays and the moored boats. It is wide, open and paved with a uniform surface, making it comfortable for people with reduced mobility, wheelchair users, pushchairs and mobility aids.

From the port, the route continues into the main street leading into the historic centre of the town. Along this stretch stands the Church of Santa Eufemia, one of Bermeo’s main historic landmarks, located very close to the route and clearly visible from the street.

A few metres further on, the route reaches Lamera Park, one of the town’s most important public spaces. This is a large, open and mostly flat park-square with continuous paving, trees, fountains, benches and several cafés and restaurants around its perimeter. It also serves as a transport hub, as the bus stops connecting Bermeo with Bilbao and other towns in Bizkaia are located here.

Crossing the park leads to the Church of San Francisco and its cloister. Access to the cloister is provided by a small ramp that overcomes the entrance level difference. The cloister courtyard is usable, although its irregular cobblestone paving may cause vibration and require greater attention from wheelchair users or people with mobility aids. It is one of the most distinctive heritage spaces along the route.

The complete itinerary is approximately 1 km long and links the marina, the old port, the main streets of the historic centre, Lamera Park and the San Francisco complex in a continuous way. Throughout the walk, there is a constant visual relationship with the harbour landscape, traditional architecture and Bermeo’s main historic landmarks, creating a compact, mostly level and easy-to-follow route.
