Description
Muñatones Castle, located in Muskiz, is one of the most unique medieval complexes in Bizkaia. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, it is the only tower in the area considered a true castle due to its outer walls, which enhance its defensive character. It is closely linked to the figure of Lope García de Salazar, a prominent nobleman, warrior, and writer, whose life and legacy help to understand the complex history of the region in the Middle Ages.
The visit to the castle is carried out exclusively through a guided tour, which allows visitors to contextualize the building, its strategic function, and the way of life of the rural nobility. The tour is complemented by the nearby El Pobal Forge, founded in the 16th century by Ochoa de Salazar, the grandson of Lope García de Salazar, and it serves as an excellent example of the economic and industrial resources that sustained the power of these noble families.
From an accessibility point of view, Muñatones Castle is not adapted for wheelchair users, as the path features irregular and uneven surfaces typical of a medieval historical site. However, the site meets other accessibility criteria, such as the guided interpretive tour, which aids in understanding the space, and the staff's assistance during the tour. For people with specific needs, it is recommended to inquire beforehand about the conditions of the visit and available support.
