Description
The Monastery of Santa María de Zenarruza, located in the Goierria neighbourhood within the municipality of Ziortza-Bolibar, is one of the most significant monastic complexes in Bizkaia and a notable landmark of the territory’s historical and spiritual heritage. Set in an elevated rural environment of high landscape value, the monastery has historically been an important religious and cultural centre, as well as a place of passage and hospitality along the Northern Route of the Camino de Santiago. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, and the architectural ensemble preserves a distinctive Gothic aesthetic, with Romanesque elements and later additions reflecting its historical evolution over time.
Access to the site is provided through a landscaped cobbled environment, organised by means of a perimeter path that defines the green areas and leads to the church. The surface of the route is cobbled and fairly uniform, allowing continuous approach to the complex. To overcome a small level difference at the entrance, a gently sloping ramp is provided, avoiding the presence of steps along the main route. The outdoor environment is spacious, clear and free of significant obstacles, facilitating movement and a leisurely visit to the gardens before entering the monastery.
The monastic complex is organised around the church and the conventual spaces, forming a sober and monumental enclosure that invites contemplation and reflection. Inside, the church stands out as a single-nave space with side chapels and a notable main altarpiece, along with other areas linked to monastic life. The interior space has an open layout that favours circulation, although some accesses and elements inherent to the historic architecture may include occasional steps. The liturgical furnishings are arranged in a stable manner, allowing visitors to remain comfortably during their visit.
The complex is complemented by an adjoining hostel, traditionally linked to the accommodation of pilgrims, which usually remains open for much of the year and reinforces the monastery’s historic role as a place of passage and hospitality on the Camino de Santiago.
The Monastery of Santa María de Zenarruza is a resource of high historical, cultural and spiritual value, closely linked to the identity and religious tradition of Bizkaia. The site meets minimum accessibility criteria, verified by specialised technical professionals.
