The image shows a section of the Marqués de Arriluze Promenade in Getxo, with a wide pedestrian route paved with regular slabs, continuous, level and without steps, allowing wheelchair users and people with mobility aids to move through it comfortably; along the route there are wooden benches with backrests placed outside the main circulation strip and trees set in tree pits that do not reduce the clear width, while on the left there is a traffic lane separated by a different type of pavement and on the right a low stone wall acts as a protective barrier against the drop towards the estuary, maintaining throughout an open space with good visibility and no obstacles or changes in level in the walking area.
The image shows an information plaque embedded in a stone wall next to the promenade, with a schematic map of the area and pictograms on the sides; the plaque is located at a low height, flush with the top of the wall, which may make it difficult to read for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility, as it requires approaching very closely or leaning forward, although the surrounding paving consists of regular slabs that allow stable access to the information point without steps or immediate obstacles.
The image shows another section of the Marqués de Arriluze Promenade beside the estuary, with a continuous and regular slab pavement, without visible steps or changes in level, allowing comfortable circulation for wheelchair users and people with mobility aids; on the left there is a vertical information panel accessible directly from the route, and on the right a stone wall provides protection along the water’s edge without encroaching on the clear width of the walkway, keeping the route wide, open and unobstructed along its entire length.
The image shows a view of the estuary from the Marqués de Arriluze Promenade, with a paved platform in the foreground connected to the pedestrian route and bordered by a stone wall that acts as a safety barrier against the drop to the water surface; the walking surface is continuous and regular, allowing wheelchair users and people with mobility aids to circulate, while the edge towards the estuary is clearly defined and does not reduce the clear width of the path, maintaining a wide, open and stable space along the promenade.

Marqués de Arriluze Promenade

Description

The Marqués de Arriluze Promenade is a coastal urban route located in the municipality of Getxo, running between the Getxo Marina and the Abra area, connecting different scenic and heritage points of interest along the waterfront. The promenade follows the coastline in an open environment with direct views of the sea, the marina and the mouth of the Nervión estuary.

The 500-metre route is laid out as a paved pedestrian promenade integrated into the urban fabric and separated from traffic. Along the itinerary, walking areas, viewpoints and rest spaces are combined, allowing for continuous and orderly movement. The promenade links with other accessible routes along the seafront, facilitating pedestrian mobility between different parts of the municipality.

The Marqués de Arriluze Promenade serves as a corridor for walking and observing the coastal environment, from which elements such as the marina, the breakwater, nearby beaches and surrounding historic buildings can be identified. Its generally level layout and regular paving make it suitable for an accessible visit, provided the conditions of an open coastal setting are taken into account.

Highlight

  • Level route without kerbs or steps, with road and promenade on the same plane and differentiated by pavement type.
  • Continuous stone wall along the waterfront acting as a safety barrier towards the estuary and the marina.
  • Presence of benches with and without backrests, accessible litter bins and green areas in the immediate surroundings.
  • Interpretive signage integrated into the promenade identifying points of interest and the visible landscape.
  • This route meets minimum accessibility criteria, verified by specialised technicians.

Route

Marqués de Arriluze Promenade

Suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The Marqués de Arriluze Promenade forms part of Getxo’s seafront and runs along the stretch between the Marina and the Ereaga promenade. It is a linear route that runs parallel to the sea and the estuary, bringing together coastal landscape, historic architecture and urban spaces in a single continuous itinerary.

The promenade is entirely level, with no kerbs or changes in height between the roadway and the pedestrian area. Both are on the same level, but are clearly distinguished by the type of pavement: the roadway is asphalted and the pedestrian promenade is paved with specific tiles of different texture and colour, making orientation easier and clearly defining circulation areas.

At the start of the route there is a low railing and interpretive signage identifying the promenade and its surroundings. Along most of the route, the edge facing the sea is protected by a continuous stone wall that acts as a safety element and prevents falls towards the estuary or the marina. From here there are open views towards the Abra, the marina and the estuary, while on the opposite side residential buildings and representative examples of Getxo’s traditional and stately architecture line the promenade.

Rest areas with benches, some with backrests and some without, are distributed regularly along the route. Across the roadway there are green areas and a complementary urban park, which also has litter bins placed at an accessible height.

The route also includes several interpretive information points integrated into the stone wall and the pavement, providing information about visible elements such as the estuary, the marina and the coastal landscape, allowing a clear reading of the place and its context.

The result is a wide, continuous and clearly defined coastal itinerary that allows the Getxo seafront to be explored in a comfortable, safe and legible way, combining landscape, heritage and public space.
