The image shows a section of Lekeitio’s seafront promenade with a wide pedestrian route paved with regular slabs, continuous, level and without visible steps, allowing the passage of wheelchair users and people with mobility aids; on the left, a metal railing runs along the edge of the walkway as protection from the estuary water, while on the right there are building façades and a low wall that does not encroach on the clear width of the route, keeping the space open, unobstructed and with good visibility along the entire stretch.
The image shows an access to the port of Lekeitio from the historic quarter via a downward-sloping street paved with stone and cobbles, connecting an urban square with the water’s edge; the route has a noticeable gradient that may be demanding for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility, and on one side there is a metal ramp with handrails offering a safer alternative to overcome part of the slope, while the space remains wide enough, with bollards organizing the movement of vehicles and pedestrians and open views towards the marina and moored boats.
The image shows a stone-paved square in Lekeitio’s historic quarter next to the Basilica of Santa María, with a wide, continuous space defined by a stone balustrade that separates the viewpoint from the promenade by the estuary; the pavement is made of stone setts, regular but with joints that can cause vibrations when using a wheelchair, and the route runs on a single level without visible steps in the main circulation area, allowing the passage of wheelchair users and people with mobility aids, while the basilica’s arcades appear in the background, providing a covered passage without obstacles in the main walking strip.
The image shows a paved square in Lekeitio’s historic quarter beside the estuary, with a wide and continuous route of regular stone slabs that allows wheelchair users and people with mobility aids to pass; several trees are set into level tree pits flush with the paving and do not invade the clear walking width, and benches with backrests are placed in side resting areas, while in the background a railing marks the water’s edge and a seafront promenade connects to the square, with the whole space remaining level, clear and free of steps in the main circulation zone.

Description

The historic quarter of Lekeitio is located in a unique coastal setting between the Cantabrian Sea and the mouth of the Lea River, forming a fishing town closely linked to the sea and its natural environment. With documented origins dating back to 1325, the town has developed over the centuries an urban layout adapted to the cliffs and port activity, resulting in a compact historic ensemble well integrated into the coastal landscape.

Walking through the old town allows visitors to understand Lekeitio’s evolution as a fishing and trading centre traditionally connected to navigation, offshore fishing and maritime activities. Narrow streets, open squares and historic buildings are arranged in an urban fabric that links the port, the Basilica of the Assumption of Santa María and the main public spaces of the town. This layout reflects a continuous relationship between architecture, daily life and the coastal environment. The close proximity between beaches, the port and the historic centre makes it possible to explore the heart of Lekeitio on foot in a short, continuous and comfortable route.

Highlight

  • Compact urban itinerary of short distance, with homogeneous stone-slab paving in the historic quarter.
  • Seafront promenade along the estuary with a linear layout, benches, trees and an accessible viewpoint.
  • Large, level main square with resting areas, restaurants and nearby services, in front of the Basilica of Santa María.
  • Tourist Office located at the start of the route, with personal assistance, accessible information and toilets, including adapted facilities.
  • This route meets minimum accessibility criteria, verified by specialised technicians.

How to get here

Bus (Bizkaibus)

  • Line A3512 (Bilbao – Lekeitio) runs regularly throughout the day, with departures from Bilbao’s Intermodal Bus Station to the Larrotegi stop in Lekeitio. The journey usually takes around 1 hour 40 to 1 hour 45 minutes. From the Larrotegi stop, the historic quarter is a 10–15 minute walk away via an accessible urban route.
  • Other Bizkaibus lines, such as A3513 and A3523, connect Lekeitio with towns like Gernika, Amoroto and Aulesti, making travel within Bizkaia easier.

By car

  • Lekeitio can be reached by road from Bilbao or other parts of Bizkaia via the N-634 and regional roads.
  • In high season there may be parking restrictions in the town centre, so planning ahead is recommended.

Route

  • Section 1

Historic Quarter of Lekeitio

Suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The route starts at the Lekeitio Tourist Office, located opposite the Basilica of the Assumption of Santa María, in one of the town’s main urban spaces. This point serves as a reception and orientation area for visitors and offers in-person assistance, information about the town and its surroundings, and toilets, including accessible facilities.

From the Tourist Office, the route continues into the main square, a wide and largely level space that forms the heart of the historic quarter. The basilica, one of Lekeitio’s main heritage landmarks, stands here. Access to the interior of the church involves steps and there is no alternative accessible route, and it is only open to the public on specific days and at certain times, so it is advisable to check in advance at the Tourist Office.

From the square, the route leads towards the promenade along the estuary and the port, reached via level paths or sections with ramps, avoiding stairways. This seafront promenade, approximately 200 metres long, runs along the water’s edge and ends at a small viewpoint from which there are open views of the harbour and coastal surroundings.

After reaching the viewpoint, the return to the historic centre follows a street parallel to the promenade. This is a residential street with very little traffic, designed as a shared-surface street without pavements, and paved with well-laid, homogeneous stone slabs that allow for smooth and safe movement. Although the street is narrow, it is free of significant obstacles and leads back to the main square in front of the basilica, completing a circular route.

Along the way, the main resting areas are found on the seafront promenade and in the main square, where there are benches, trees, litter bins and a wide range of cafés and restaurants, making it easy to take breaks and complement the visit. The route combines open spaces, views of the harbour and historic areas, offering a compact, clearly defined and easy-to-follow itinerary within Lekeitio’s town centre.
