The image shows a historic urban space in the old town of Durango, dominated by a monumental stone arch that functions as an open passage between two squares. The environment is spacious and uncluttered, with paving made up of stone slabs and cobblestones laid in a fairly regular manner and without pronounced level changes, which facilitates pedestrian movement and the mobility of people with reduced mobility. The arch features a wide opening, with no doors or visible steps, allowing continuous, level passage. Surrounding it is an open square where roadway and pedestrian areas are at the same level, with clearly marked bollards and no significant obstacles in the main circulation areas. Although the stone paving may become slightly slippery in rainy conditions, the space allows users to walk around the arch and choose alternative, more even routes, supporting safe and accessible circulation.
The image shows a square in the historic centre of Durango dominated by a porticoed building with wide, continuous arcades that allow sheltered circulation at ground level. The paving combines stone slabs and cobbled strips arranged regularly, without steps or abrupt level changes, enabling comfortable movement for people with reduced mobility, pushchairs or mobility aids. The adjacent street is pedestrianised, with roadway and pavements at the same level and no kerbs, facilitating accessible crossings. Benches, planters and streetlights are well distributed throughout the space without encroaching on the main routes, and outdoor café terraces are located along the sides, maintaining wide and clear passageways. Overall, this is a historic urban environment with good spatial legibility, clear routes and favourable conditions for safe and accessible circulation.
This image shows the interior of a historic arcade in the urban centre, with an exposed wooden roof structure and stone pillars defining a wide, continuous space. The pavement consists of irregular stone, with decorative pebble sections embedded in the surface, which may cause slight vibrations or require extra attention from people with reduced mobility, cane users or wheelchair users, especially in wet conditions. No steps or pronounced level changes are visible, and the generous width of the space allows pedestrians to pass comfortably. Natural light enters through the side arches, aiding visual orientation, and the routes are clear, with no low-hanging elements or obstacles at head height. Overall, it is a sheltered space protected from rain and sun, mainly used by pedestrians, although the surface reflects the inherent irregularities of a historic heritage setting.
The image shows Ezkurdi Square in Durango, a wide and open space in the historic centre, featuring a historic stone fountain located at its centre. The paving is mostly continuous and level, with stone slabs and tiles that facilitate movement for people with reduced mobility, pushchairs or wheelchairs. The fountain stands on a small perimeter plinth, perceived as a localised obstacle, although the surrounding space is wide enough to move around it comfortably. In the background stands the Jesuit Church (Church of St. Joseph), along with other historic buildings, all of which are accessible from the square via wide and unobstructed routes. The square offers benches for resting, integrated green areas and good overall visibility, which supports orientation and safe circulation in this pedestrian heritage environment.

Description

The Historic Centre of Durango offers an accessible urban route through the heart of the town, ideal for discovering its main historical and architectural heritage in a compact environment closely integrated into everyday city life. It is a short, circular itinerary that allows visitors to comfortably explore the most emblematic areas of the old town, combining monuments, squares and pedestrian streets along a largely flat and easy-to-navigate route.

The streets along the route are mostly pedestrianised or have very calm traffic, with pavements and roadway at the same level, without kerbs or significant obstacles, allowing for safe and continuous movement. Approximately halfway along the route is the tourist information office, open daily, where visitors can obtain practical information and access audio guides via QR codes. These audio guides can be downloaded during the visit or received directly via WhatsApp and are currently available in three languages. The office also offers guided tours by prior arrangement.

The full itinerary is approximately 1.5 km long and ends near its starting point, making it an accessible walk that allows visitors to understand the historical, social and urban development of Durango in a comfortable way.

  • Several benches are available along the route in streets and squares; some have backrests, although most do not.

  • The historic centre of Durango offers a wide and varied range of restaurants, cafés and leisure venues distributed throughout the route, allowing visitors to take breaks and complement the visit with dining and rest options.

Route

  • Section 1

Historic Centre of Durango

Suitable for people with reduced mobility (PRM)

The route begins at one end of the historic centre, near the former arch or gateway to the town, and continues along the main streets where the most representative buildings of Durango are located, such as the Basilica of Santa María de Uribarri, the Portico of Santa Ana, the former town hall, and several historic houses and palaces. The itinerary runs over homogeneous paving surfaces, including both stone slabs and well-set cobblestones, without noticeable slopes or level changes. At certain points, particularly under the basilica’s portico, the cobblestone surface is more irregular; however, this section can easily be avoided by using the surrounding pavement, which is at the same level as the roadway.
