Description
The origins of the current museum lie in the first Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1908 and opened in 1914, and in the Museum of Modern Art, inaugurated in 1924. Both institutions and their respective collections were effectively merged in 1945, the year in which the old building was built. In 1970, the modern building was added, and in 2001, a major renovation gave the museum its current appearance.
Throughout its history, the museum has developed an exemplary model in which citizens, the local artistic community and public institutions have influenced its structure and growth through significant purchases and donations of works of art that have shaped the main core of the collection and its subsequent development.
The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum provides step-free access through glazed swing doors with a clear width of more than 80 cm, as well as accessible interior routes. Exhibition galleries are distributed across several floors, connected by lifts and, in certain areas, by gently sloping ramps. The museum offers adapted toilets on the ground floor and the second floor, equipped with swing doors, grab bars, lateral transfer space and adequate turning areas; access to the toilets is via automatic doors operated by push buttons. Some artworks feature easy-to-read labels, and selected exhibitions include adapted pieces for visitors with visual impairments. The café and museum shop are located on the ground floor, with accessible entrances and suitable interior circulation.
