Castle of Butrón

Go back to Butrón Castle

Description

The Castle of Butrón transports visitors back to the Middle Ages and to the banderiza wars that confronted different noble lineages for centuries. It is located in the municipality of Gatika, halfway between Bilbao and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, on a rocky hilltop surrounded by an ancient forest that reinforces its defensive character and symbolic presence in the landscape.

For more than three hundred years, from the 16th century onwards, the castle was the scene of continuous and violent conflicts between two noble factions in Bizkaia. The Lords of Butrón, sheltered within the fortress, exercised their power and control over the surrounding territory. However, Butrón was not always a castle: in the mid-13th century it was a tower house, which was transformed into a castle in the 14th century by the 5th Lord of Butrón.

With the end of the banderiza wars in the early 16th century, the building was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. It was not until the late 19th century that restoration work was undertaken, resulting in the current appearance of the castle. The project was led by architect Francisco de Cubas, who rebuilt the castle in 1878 following the historicist and romantic criteria of the time, inspired by the great medieval castles of Europe.
