MUÑATONES CASTLE

Castle from the 14th and 15th centuries

Built during the 14th and 15th centuries in the context of the Bandos Wars, this Castle is one of the most outstanding elements of the architectural heritage of Bizkaia. Its history is linked to one of the most unique medieval characters, the powerful Lope García de Salazar, a man of arms and letters, to whom we owe the writing of the well-known “Bienandanzas e Fortunas”.

The El Pobal Ironworks has a close relationship with the Salazar de Muñatones, true lords of iron in their time, who built this ironworks at the beginning of the 16th century. The joint visit to the two monuments will give us the opportunity to better understand the ways of life of the rural nobility and the sources of wealth on which they based their power.
