Pozalagua
The Pozalagua cave is found in the Karrantza valley, in the heart of the Armañón Natural Park. This cathedral-like subterranean world is home to the highest concentration of eccentric stalactites in the world. These peculiar formations grow at whim in all directions, defying gravity and forming a spellbinding mosaic. The cave was discovered by chance following an explosion in a nearby quarry that opened up a hole in the mountain. On the other side, a dazzling underground universe emerged. A visit runs between stalactites, stalagmites, and flows, and culminates with a lookout that presents the cavern in all of its splendour. Facing the cave is the Parketxea or Armañón Natural Park Information Centre, which presents all of its secrets through a permanent exhibition and lookout with spectacular views.

Information about accessibility
A Good Idea
Pozalagua is found in Enkarterri-Meatzaldea, Bizkaia’s largest region. In addition to climbing into this record-breaking cave, here you can visit unique spots, explore back alleys and medieval bridges, and lose yourself in endless forests. The eastern-most land of the region is the old “mining area” of Bizkaia, where Euskadi began its industrial revolution with the use of iron mines. The landscape has changed, but the echoes of that time still resonate along the way. An example of this is the El Pobal (Muskiz) forge, which has kept its flame alive since the 16th century.
Did you know?
Pozalagua is not Bizkaia’s only cave? The Santimamiñe Cave in Kortezubi and its rock paintings are also of immeasurable value, as is Balzola in the Arratia Valley.
