Santurtzi Sea Museum

Description

It is located in the heart of the fishing port of Santurtzi in the fishermen’s guild building.

The Museum of the Sea, Santurtzi Itsas Museoa aims to bring residents and visitors closer to Santurtzi’s relationship with the sea, in its professional, cultural, recreational and social aspects, without forgetting that much of the maritime heritage lies in people.

Throughout the tour, various audiovisual media showcase our connection with the maritime world from 1600 to the present day.

Visitors can learn about the important work carried out by the bar pilots (lemanes) to overcome the dreaded “sandbar” that made it difficult for ships to enter and leave the Bilbao estuary, as well as how this serious navigation problem was solved.

The museum can be visited via an audio-guided tour, which is offered in several languages: Basque, Spanish, English, and French. It also offers guided tours adapted for people with physical, hearing, visual, intellectual, and organic disabilities.
