Description

San Mamés Stadium, located in Bilbao, is the home ground where Athletic Club plays its matches, a team with a unique philosophy and more than 120 years of history. An international benchmark both for its modern facilities and for the legacy of the historic stadium it replaced in 2013, it is known worldwide as “La Catedral”.

With a capacity of 53,331 spectators, the stadium was designed in accordance with the most demanding UEFA standards, incorporating accessibility-oriented criteria from the outset. During the renewal process, particular attention was paid to ensuring a sufficient number of seats for people with reduced mobility, as well as to creating a more comfortable, functional and safe environment for all audiences.

The venue features adapted access points, wide and well-signposted spaces, lifts, reserved seating for wheelchair users and adapted sanitary facilities. In addition, the stadium follows a continuous improvement approach to accessibility, maintaining dialogue with groups such as Peña Denon Athletic, made up primarily of people with reduced mobility, with the aim of continuing to progress and exploring adaptations for other types of disability, especially on match days.

These features, together with the quality of the facilities and the level of customer service provided both on match days and during guided tours, make San Mamés a welcoming and functional space, where the sporting atmosphere and contemporary design come together to accommodate diverse audiences. The stadium has received international recognition with awards such as Best Sports Building at the World Architecture Festival 2015 and Venue of the Year 2017 at the World Football Summit.
