Description

The Museum of Sacred Art was founded in 1961.

Its aim was, and still is, to preserve, restore, study and disseminate the religious heritage of the Diocese of Bilbao.

It has a permanent exhibition of more than 500 pieces, and also has an extensive and growing reserve collection with works of art from the churches of Bizkaia and private donations.

In addition, the museum oversees all the works of art dispersed across Bizkaia. Restorations, relocations of pieces and spatial adaptations are all managed by the museum. An instrument for the conservation of our cultural heritage.

The museum is located in the convent of La Encarnación. Founded in 1514 by Dominican nuns, it was the first convent for women in Bilbao.

Its austere façade gives no hint of the tranquil cloister inside that leads to the exhibition rooms.

It forms part of the convent complex beside the adjoining church and its facilities had various uses (educational centre, barracks, hospital), until it was converted into the Bilbao Museum of Sacred Art in 1995.
