Casa Torre Muntsaratz

Description

The impressive Muntsaratz tower is the home of one of the best-known families in the Duranguesado region. The original building dates back to the 9th century, and the Muntsaratz family later decided to renovate it, turning it into a magnificent Renaissance tower. It was originally a fortified tower, as demonstrated by the ground floor, which is very airtight. It only has a few vents for the horses and the entrance to the building. Above the entrance, you can see the family coat of arms. The Muntsaratz family decided to convert it into a palace, as can be seen in the upper floors. The second floor is very open and the two main façades feature arches that enhance the building’s beauty. The top floor is a modest framework of wood and brick. The building is crowned with a large roof. It is currently the headquarters of the Kalitatea Foundation.

Casa Torre Muntsaratz is located in a historic building of medieval origin with a traditional architectural layout, which entails the presence of construction elements characteristic of its period. It was declared a Cultural Heritage Site on 17 July 1984.

At present, Muntsaratz can only be viewed from the outside, and interior visits are not permitted.
