Description

The Basilica of Our Lady of Begoña, located in the Begoña district, is one of the main religious temples and one of the most representative spiritual symbols of Bilbao and Bizkaia. Situated on an elevated position overlooking the city, it constitutes a historical, cultural and heritage landmark for the people of Bilbao. Its origins date back to the 16th century, and the current building displays a distinctive Late Gothic aesthetic with later additions. Inside, the image of the Virgin of Begoña, patron saint of Bizkaia and popularly known as Amatxu de Begoña, is venerated. The image presides over the main altar and attracts numerous worshippers and visitors throughout the year, especially during the celebrations on 15 August.

The church is characterised by a single-nave layout that creates a sense of spaciousness and facilitates generous internal circulation. The basilica is set on a slightly ascending surface and features wide interior spaces without architectural barriers. The main altar is accessed via five steps and is surrounded by side chapels. The furnishings consist of pews without armrests and with backrests at an appropriate height, enhancing comfort during visits.

The main access is via a lateral ramp that complements the existing steps, allowing entry for people with reduced mobility. The doors are manual and remain open during opening hours. Exit from the church is via staircases located on the sides of the main façade. A shop is located in the entrance vestibule, and offering candles are positioned at a low height to facilitate their use. Pets are not permitted inside.

The basilica is a resource of high historical, cultural and spiritual value, fully integrated into the historic environment of the city. The site meets minimum accessibility criteria, verified by specialised technical professionals.
