Description
The Balmaseda History Museum is one of the most attractive tourist resources in the town, welcoming thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. Located in the Church of San Juan del Moral, it houses an important part of Balmaseda’s historical and cultural heritage. Open since 2003, the museum presents both historical and ethnographic aspects that help recreate the town’s past.
Works of art, books, documents and antique objects form part of the museum’s collection, which is divided into the following sections: History, Personalities, Popular Events, Historical and Artistic Heritage, Industry and Traditions, and Historical Furniture. At the beginning of the visit, several volumes from the municipal historical archive dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries can be seen, including royal privileges granted to the town by the Lord of Bortedo, the first municipal election register, and the account book of the former hospital located on Pío Bermejillo Street. Visitors can learn about the town’s most emblematic buildings and, through models and drawings, recreate the image of a walled Balmaseda with its castle on the hill. There are also areas dedicated to traditions and industry, such as txakoli wine, trade, ironworks, furniture making, the railway and the putxera. A carding machine recalls the “La Encartada” beret factory, now converted into a museum. This journey through history encourages reflection and a better understanding of the present.
The Balmaseda History Museum is located in the Old Town, an area with traffic restrictions; for group visits, parking is provided in a nearby area. The museum is arranged on a single floor and does not require an elevator. There are no public toilets available. As it is housed in a historic building, certain constraints related to its original layout may apply. Visitors with specific accessibility needs are advised to contact the museum in advance to confirm access conditions and available routes.
