    • When to visit: Bizkaia’s pastry shops and bakeries are open all year round, although it is advisable to check opening hours, especially on Sundays and public holidays. Seasonal specialties, such as Saint John’s cakes or Roscón de Reyes, are only available at certain times of the year.
    • How to enjoy the route: You can visit several of these pastry shops in a single day, combining a stroll through Bilbao’s historic neighbourhoods with trips to Getxo, Gernika-Lumo, Lekeitio or Durango.
    • Don’t leave without trying: Carolinas, butter buns, pastel de arroz (Bilbao rice cake), truffles, cream-filled pastry horns and each bakery’s own signature specialties.
    • Top tip: If you’re visiting at the weekend or during the high season, arrive in the middle of the morning. That’s when you’ll find the widest selection of freshly baked pastries.
