Discover where to eat in Bilbao

Three options for eating in Bilbao where the locals eat

For pintxo lovers

When we think about eating in Bilbao Bizkaia, one of the first words that come to mind is, without doubt, “pintxos”.

And yes, pintxos, these delicious samples of Basque gastronomy in miniature, are an experience that you must not miss. But we are not talking about eating pintxos in a single bar, but going on an authentic pintxo route, from one bar to another, as the locals do.

We recommend a visit to the Mercado de la Ribera, full of gastro-bars - where you will even find one dedicated to gildas - or, if you prefer to be in the open air, go to the Plaza Nueva and to streets such as María Muñoz (in the Old Town), Ledesma (in Abando, right in the centre) or Diputación (next to Plaza Moyua). These aren’t the only streets where you can enjoy good pintxos, not by a long way, but they are safe options.

Basque gastronomy around town

If you prefer to sit at a table, in Bilbao you will find many restaurants where you can enjoy Basque gastronomy beyond pintxos and - best of all - at a reasonable price.

Some classic options are, for example, restaurants such as:

  • Anboto (Jardines street)
  • Pentxo (Belostikale)
  • Zapirain (Juan de Ajuriaguerra)
  • Txakoli (Artxanda)

Bear in mind, however, that during a walk through Bilbao, even without a fixed route, you will spot many other traditional restaurants. Don’t be afraid to try, as the level of gastronomy in Bilbao is so high that you won’t be disappointed.

The most exquisite gastronomic experience

Finally, you will also find authentic Michelin Star restaurants in Bilbao, as we said at the beginning, where you will have a gastronomic experience at a superlative level.

In fact, there are 6 restaurants with Michelin Stars in Bilbao in 2024. They are restaurants that, by the way, appear repeatedly in the prestigious guide, a sign that their work and their focus have been at the top level for a long time.

These restaurants are:

  • Mina, in Muelle Marzana, with Álvaro Garrido and Lara Martín. It offers always seasonal sea and mountain products.
  • Nerua, located in the Guggenheim museum, with chef Josean Alija. They also work with local and seasonal products.
  • Ola Martín Berasategui, in the Tokyo hotel. The head of the kitchen is Raúl Cabrera, who trained with the master Martín Berasategui, and here you will also find local products that change according to the market.
  • Zarate: This is the restaurant of chef Sergio Ortíz de Zárate, native of Lekeitio. It is known for its excellent fish, combined with the best agricultural products.
  • Zortziko: a top-level culinary experience and classic style by the hand of chef Daniel García.
