Muy cerca de Bilbao, la comarca de Uribe mezcla los paisajes de las playas y acantilados con el interior más verde, el turismo de aventura con paseos para descubrir el pasado de nuestro planeta, los frutos del mar con los viñedos de txakoli, las atalayas frente a la costa con castillos de ensueño en medio del bosque. Por eso, cuando el aventurero Gotzon Mantuliz busca un lugar para relajarse, siempre lo encuentra en Uribe, su casa, un lugar espectacular para desconectar.
Sin duda, Uribe es uno de los destinos playeros más concurridos de Bizkaia. Con playas para todos los gustos que se pueden recorrer gracias a una sencilla ruta, el surf es el rey en el mar, mientras que los arenales son perfectos para relajarse y disfrutar en plena naturaleza.
En Sopela, la playa de Barinatxe, más conocida como La Salvaje, está protegida por un alto acantilado desde el que se practica el parapente, mientras que las playas de Arriatera y Atxabiribil se convierten en una sola cuando baja la marea. En Barrika se encuentra la solitaria playa de Meñakoz, ideal para surfistas expertos y para desconectar en un entorno con una gran diversidad. En esta misma localidad están las playas de Barrika, con sus rocas asomando en la bajamar, y la de Muriola, que albergó el rodaje de la famosa serie de televisión Juego de Tronos.
Los arenales de Plentzia y Gorliz, situados en una preciosa bahía de aguas tranquilas perfectas para el piragüismo, son ideales para disfrutar con la cuadrilla y la familia. La playa de Armintzakalde alberga varias especies representativas de la fauna y flora del litoral y del fondo marino, mientras que la de Bakio se encuentra junto al casco urbano y con vistas a la inolvidable isla de San Juan de Gaztelugatxe y sus 241 peldaños, la joya de la corona de la costa de Bizkaia.
Otra de las sorpresas que guarda este rincón de la costa de Bizkaia es su gran riqueza geológica, destacando el Flysch de Barrika. Se trata de una formación rocosa que se generó durante millones de años en el fondo del océano, alternando capas de sedimentos duros y otros más blandos. Cuando el fondo marino emergió formando un espectacular paisaje frente al mar, dejó a la vista estratos en los que se puede leer como en las páginas de un libro las diferentes etapas geológicas que se han sucedido en la Tierra desde hace más de 140 millones de años. Muy cerca, en el puerto de Armintza, el flysch adquiere un color negro característico, que se aprecia en los acantilados y en las rocas que asoman en el fondo cuando baja la marea.
En el entorno rural de los valles del interior aún hoy en día se mantiene el modo de vida tradicional y un relevante patrimonio histórico y artístico. Paseando o en bicicleta, la mejor manera de conocer los valles del Txorierri y Butrón en el interior es recorrer sus caminos, y encontrarse con tesoros como el Castillo de Butrón, una casa torre medieval ubicada en Gatika que fue transformada en un monumento de inspiración romántica en el siglo XIX. Pasear a caballo por el jardín que lo rodea con una importante variedad de árboles y plantas, tanto autóctonas como exóticas, viendo como las torres del castillo se alzan sobre una colina, al igual que en los cuentos de hadas, es una experiencia inolvidable.
También hay que acercarse hasta los baserris -los típicos caseríos vascos- con prados en los que pasta el ganado y huertas donde se producen las deliciosas materias primas de la reconocida gastronomía vasca. Y entre estas hay que destacar el txakoli, nuestro vino joven y afrutado, que cuenta con una gran tradición en Uribe Kosta. Las bodegas de la zona ofrecen catas y visitas guiadas para conocer de primera mano los sabores del txakoli, y en el Txakolingunea, el Museo del Txakoli en Bakio, se muestra su cultivo y elaboración, así como la importancia que ha tenido en la historia de Bizkaia.
