J80 World Sailing Championship Getxo

From 13th to 20th of July the Real Club Marítimo del Abra - Real Sporting Club de Getxo will host the World Championship of the J80 sailing class. The World Cup event will bring together about 100 boats and more than 500 sailors from all over the world who will play for the title in the waters of the Cantabrian Sea. A nautical spectacle that you can’t miss.

Bizkaia has a long seafaring tradition. Its coasts still preserve the memories of old whalers, fishermen, discoverers, boat builders and other professions linked to the sea. Getxo, located at only 30 minutes from Bilbao, is a perfect example. This beautiful seaside location retains much of that essence although it has also been able to adapt to new times. In fact, today it continues celebrating great events linked to the sea, such as the J80 Sailing World Championship.

Between 13th and 20th July, the surroundings of Las Arenas and Getxo Marina will be the epicenter of the most important competition of the J80 International sailing Class Association. The competition organised by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra - Real Sporting Club, will bring together the best specialists and world champions, both national and international, highlighting the crews from England, France, Ireland, Belgium, Canada and India. Altogether, the event is expected to gather together about 100 boats and 500 sailors from all over the world.

Moreover, you will also be able to see famous boats such as the ‘Hotel Princesa Yaiza’ of the five times world champion Rayco Tabares, the ‘Maui Jim Sunglasses’ of Javier Aguado, the ‘Ono’ of 2018 Spanish Cup winner Daniel de la Pedraja, the ‘Bribón Movistar’ of Marc Antonio, the ‘New territories’ of Alexei Semenov, the ‘Garatu’ of Iker Almandoz, the ‘Marbella Team’ of Juan Luis Páez or the ‘Raytan’ of Ángel Herrerías, among others.

Activities for weighing anchor

With the aim of immersing the assistants in the sailing and navigation world, and of promoting the patrimonial value, during the championship days there will be different activities and socialisation workshops for the enjoyment of all the public. These will take place both in the Real Club Marítimo del Abra - Real Sporting Club de Getxo and in the Getxo Marina, at only 100 metres from the urban centre of Las Arenas.

Where to eat

The nearest restaurants are at Puerto Deportivo (Getxo Marina), where you can find a wide range of restaurants with international cuisine. In addition, if you want to rest, there is a large area of chill out terraces. On the other hand, if you are looking for traditional local food, you can walk to Puerto Viejo (Old Port), where you will find excellent restaurants specialised in fish and seafood. In the area, you can also eat delicious pintxos in any of its bars.
