Un viaje por la Ría de Bilbao con el aventurero bizkaitarra para descubrir el pasado y el futuro de la ciudad
Bilbao no se entiende sin su Ría. En sus orillas se fundó la Villa en el año 1300, y creció gracias a los barcos que llenaban sus muelles y a la población que se estableció en sus márgenes, a los cargaderos de hierro de las minas cercanas que poblaron sus riberas y a la imponente industria siderúrgica y naval de Bizkaia que prosperó junto a ella.

Bilbao no para de reinventarse y la Ría ha vuelto a ser la gran protagonista de la última transformación de Bilbao, la cual se ha recuperado para la ciudad y sus habitantes.
Caminando por sus paseos, en bicicleta, reservando una visita guiada, una excursión en barco, e incluso remando en un kayak junto a las traineras que bogan por sus aguas, en un recorrido por la Ría para descubrir las huellas históricas e industriales junto a los modernos edificios, jardines y paseos, podemos apreciar cómo ha cambiado Bilbao a lo largo de los siglos. Porque, como dice Gotzon Mantuliz, conocido aventurero y colaborador de Zapeando, "la Ría es la mejor manera de conocer la transformación de Bilbao, la capital del mundo, una ciudad única y con alma propia".
El Puente de San Antón es un buen lugar para observar los barrios con más solera de Bilbao: Atxuri y su estación de tren; el Casco Viejo, corazón de la ciudad en el que sobresalen la aguja de la Catedral de Santiago y el Mercado de La Ribera, el más grande de Europa y meca para los amantes de la buena comida. En la orilla opuesta, el histórico barrio de Bilbao La Vieja y su Casa Cuna, y el bohemio San Francisco, que esconde en sus entrañas las minas de hierro que tanta fama dieron a Bilbao.
Tras rodear el Casco Viejo, la Ría llega al Puente del Arenal construido para unir la zona histórica con el elegante Ensanche, la expansión de la ciudad en el siglo XIX. A un lado podemos ver uno de los referentes culturales de la Villa, el Teatro Arriaga junto al Arenal, antiguo puerto convertido en parque y paseo. En el lado opuesto, la Estación de La Concordia y la Sociedad Bilbaína, dos preciosos ejemplos de la arquitectura de principios del siglo XIX.
A partir del Ayuntamiento, y especialmente en la margen izquierda, es donde realmente se empieza a apreciar la última gran transformación de Bilbao. Donde antes había vías de tren, almacenes y fábricas hoy en día han surgido paseos y parques jalonados con esculturas, modernos edificios, como Isozaki Atea, la Biblioteca de Deusto, o la Torre Iberdrola, y nuevos puentes, como Zubi Zuri, obra de Calatrava, o la pasarela Pedro Arrupe. Cerca de esta, la Ría se refleja en el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, auténtico símbolo de la transformación de la ciudad.
Como un barco a medio construir, el Palacio Euskalduna se ubica en los terrenos donde estuvo el astillero del mismo nombre, del que nos han quedado la Grúa Carola y los muelles que ahora ocupan las embarcaciones del Itsasmuseum, recuerdos del pasado industrial de la ciudad.
Aguas abajo, desde el animado barrio de Deusto, la Ría nos ofrece otra espectacular panorámica, la del estadio de San Mamés, la Catedral del Athletic Club, sobre el colorido barrio marinero de Olabeaga y su mural Soñar. Enfrente, el Puente Frank Gehry, en honor al creador del Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, es el último de los 14 puentes que unen ambas márgenes de la Ría, conectando Deusto con la isla de Zorrozaurre, el proyecto de regeneración urbana diseñado por Zaha Hadid para recuperar un espacio que estuvo ocupado por la industria y convertirlo en un nuevo barrio de Bilbao
En su camino hacia el mar, la Ría sigue mostrando cómo han cambiado a lo largo de los años las poblaciones ribereñas. Barakaldo y Sestao, en la margen izquierda, históricamente más obrera e industrial, podemos ver los restos de los cargaderos de mineral y como en los terrenos antaño ocupados por la industria pesada ahora se levantan nuevos barrios y zonas verdes. Pero sin duda, la Ría guarda uno de sus mayores tesoros para el final. Cerca de su desembocadura, uniendo el casco histórico de Portugalete con el residencial Getxo, está el monumental Puente Bizkaia, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
Hoy y siempre, la Ría es testigo y escenario de la historia de Bilbao.
