One of the greatest spectacles that autumn gives us is the explosion of colours carried out by nature and the nature parks of our territory. Climbing up to Gorbeia, the green heart of Bizkaia, and discovering its villages, forests and meadows as we climb to the top. Urkiola hosts myths and legends and there we will have the chance become real shepherds by looking after a flock of sheep; and we will be able to unravel the secrets hidden in the cave of Pozalagua, located in Armañón, a potholing paradise.

Closer to the sea, we will be able to explore a ‘must’ , Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, a natural paradise between the mountains and the sea, and have the chance to observe ,from the Urdaibai Bird Centre, thousands of birds that at this time of year stop at the marshes and cliffs in the area. We will also have the chance to take a walk between quiet beaches and dizzying cliffs to get to know our geological heritage and the impressive Flysch of Bizkaia. By the way, on the busiest days, do not forget to book your free ticket to visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

The inland valleys of  Bizkaia, full of life and history, are a peaceful environment where one will come across with magic corners, routes and excursions that you can complete on foot along the paths that once ran through the territory or go on a horse ride along streams and through the mountains. Autumn is a great time to get away from the pace of the city and unwind the mind  in the quiet villages where tradition is still present, preserved with great care in the traditional museums. And we cannot miss the opportunity to discover the Basque craft and design, which can be found in local and traditional shops and stores as well as in the most modern of our towns and cities.

Culture is shared and scattered throughout Bizkaia. In Bilbao, the protagonist is the profound transformation it has undergone in recent years, with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao as its flagship, which has turned the city into a true modern open-air museum. In this process, Bilbao has not forgotten its heart, the Casco Viejo, nor the industrial heritage that has been bequeathed by its mining and industrial past. Whether on our own or on a guided walking tour, cycling or even sailing along its main artery, the Ria, the city reveals its history and many of the secrets it hides.

Bizkaia treasures an wide cultural heritage to be explored thanks to the plans to spend the day out that take us closer to unique corners scattered throughout its geography: the mouth of the estuary, linking Portugalete and Getxo, stands out the imposing Bizkaia Bridge, a World Heritage Site; in historical sites such as Gernika and its Assembly House, in the monumental Durango or in the medieval town of Balmaseda, the past comes alive; and in the fishing villages such as Ondarroa, Lekeitio, Ea, Bermeo and Santurtzi, the connection between the fishing villages and the sea is still maintained.

Autumn is also a great moment to get away from the stress and relax in the middle of nature so as to regain your strength. And better if you can share it with our partner in a romantic getaway full of unique plans, such as letting them pamper us in one of the spa resorts in Bizkaia; discovering the secrets of txakoli and learning how to pair it in the wine cellars and vineyards scattered throughout the territory; or taking a gastronomic tour to savour the best of our cuisine: the innovative dishes in modern restaurants, the quality of local product in the traditional dishes and, of course, the delicious pintxos served in our bars.
