Plan your trip to the coast of Bilbao Bizkaia and enjoy its unique landscape.

Flysch of Bizkaia, a unique and exciting coastline

The Bizkaia Flysch is a geological formation that reveals millions of years of history through its layers of sedimentary rocks. This unique and spectacular coastal landscape is a testament to the interaction between land and sea. The flysch cliffs, with their clearly visible strata, are not only a delight for geologists, but also for tourists in search of breathtaking scenery.

The flysch stretches from the eastern end of the coast of Bilbao Bizkaia to the neighbouring province of Gipuzkoa, and provide an ideal setting for hiking routes to explore this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve

Urdaibai, recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, is a place of great ecological wealth and natural beauty. Formed at the mouth of the Oka River, Urdaibai is a haven for migratory birds and a paradise for birdwatchers. The Urdaibai Bird Center offers a unique opportunity to observe more than 200 species of birds that pass through this area every year.

Beaches such as Laga and Laida, together with small coves such as Antzoras and Aritzatxu, offer an ideal setting for relaxing and contemplating nature. The area also has points of historical interest such as the Santimamiñe cave, with Palaeolithic cave paintings, and the Oma Forest, also known as the painted forest because of the artistic twist given to the trees.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a treasure of our coast

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the most emblematic places on the coast of Bilbao Bizkaia. This islet, linked to the mainland by a stone bridge, rises above the Cantabrian Sea. Climbing its 241 steps to the hermitage at the top is a challenge worth the breathtaking views.

This hermitage has a deep connection with the fishermen of the area, who leave votive offerings inside in gratitude for having survived the sea storms.

Near Gaztelugatxe, the Matxitxako lighthouse and the islands of Akatz and Izaro add even more charm to this area. These islands are home to colonies of seabirds and are a point of interest for nature lovers.
